New York Times recommends Spanish cities in 2016 travel guide

Don’t be surprised if you hear a sharp rise in American accents this year in Spain.

The New York Times has listed three Spanish cities in its 52 essential travel destinations for 2016.

Malaga, which enjoyed a huge rise in tourism last year, is recommended as a place to find ‘beauty, but now a cultural capital, too’.

Its abundance of museums is highlighted as big draw, alongside the popular beaches and towns found in the wider province.

In February last year, Olive Press columnist Adam Neale proposed Malaga as the new Barcelona, a concept followed up by the Daily Mail.

Elsewhere, Catalunya capital Barcelona and San Sebastian, found in the Basque Country, complete Spain’s presence in the list.

The former is hailed as the place to celebrate the beloved architect Antoni Gaudi, while the latter is described as a ‘culinary capital expanding its repertoire’.
