Nine runners injured in San Fermin running of bulls

9 July 2007

PAMPLONA – Nine runners were injured during the second day of the traditional running of the bulls in the Spanish city of Pamplona, officials said.

The Red Cross said two of the runners were gored by bulls, and one was taken to Virgen del Camino Hospital for treatment of a wound to his right thigh that will require surgery.

Navarre Hospital treated three of the injured, including a 37-year-old man from Cordoba who suffered multiple injuries on the Santo Domingo stretch.

A 35-year-old Pamplona man sustained multiple bruises and head trauma on the Mercaderes stretch of the run.

On Saturday, four runners ended up in the hospital, including one who was gored in the leg, Navarre regional government officials said.

Saturday was the first of the eight days of the running of the bulls, part of the annual San Fermin festival.

Each morning, Spanish and some foreign daredevils run ahead of six fighting bulls being led along an 848-meter (930-yard) stretch of barricaded streets to the bullring.

Besides the bulls, the festival also offers processions, concerts, recitals of “jotas” (songs typical of the region), fireworks and passacaglia dancing.
