Morocco detains 86 would-be migrants to Spain

5 February 2008

RABAT – Moroccan police Tuesday arrested 86 African would-be immigrants to Spain, intercepting their two rubber dinghies after they set sail near Nador in the south-east, police said.

The migrants had intended to cross over to the southern Spanish coast. Nearly 470 migrants have been held in the Nador region so far in 2008.

On Sunday, several boats carrying 155 migrants were intercepted off Western Sahara. The migrants were on their way to Spain’s Canary Islands.

The number of undocumented migrants present in Morocco is estimated at between 10,000 and 15,000. Most of them come from African countries south of Morocco.
