ALICANTE — A pensioner who killed his paralysed wife claimed he murdered her “so she would not suffer”.
The 75-year-old stabbed his wife to death in a geriatric home.
The 74-year-old was paralysed from the neck down and had to depend on others for her care.
After he stabbed her, her former husband tried to turn the knife on himself but failed to kill himself.
He was admitted to the Hospital General de Alicante with an injury to the neck.
The pensioner had no history of violence towards his wife but did suffer from schizophrenia.
Police said they were not treating this as another case of domestic violence, but instead as “a crime of compassion”.
The killing took place at about 7am in the Virgen del Remedio de Alicante geriatric home.
The man’s nephew David Castillo said his uncle had tried to stab himself to death but had failed.
Doctors said he was not thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries.
