MADRID — Spanish authorities have arrested a Moroccan suspected of belonging to a militant Islamic group which recruited people to fight in Iraq.
Officials close to the investigation told EFE that the arrest of Mohamed Anouar Zaoudi was made Sunday in the southern town of Estepona as part of an operation launched on 10 January in the northern region of Catalonia by various police and intelligence agencies.
The sources said that Anouar Zaoudi worked for the leader of the broken-up Islamic fundamentalist cell, Mohamed Mrabet Fahsi.
Zaoudi’s arrest comes after the detention during the course of this month of a score of Muslims across Spain on charges of being members of groups dedicated to recruiting Islamist fighters to send to Iraq to fight the U.S.-led occupation of that country.
The suspects, who allegedly have links to several countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, were identified after monitoring the international activities of the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group and the Algeria-based Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat.
