IRA suspect to be extradited

14 October 2004

MADRID – Spain is to extradite to Britain a suspected member of the IRA arrested earlier this week and who is wanted for a deadly 1996 attack on British army base in Northern Ireland, court officials said Thursday.

Michael Gerard Rogan agreed to be extradited in a hearing late Wednesday before a judge at Spain’s highest criminal court, which will speed up his transfer to British authorities.

The 44-year-old was detained on Spain’s Canary Islands on Monday after eight years as a fugitive following a 1996 car bombing of the British military’s main army base west of Belfast, which killed one person and injured several others.

He had been the subject of three international arrest warrants.

The IRA, the Catholic paramilitary organization opposed to London’s rule in the British province, had sought an amnesty for Rogan during the 1998 Good Friday peace accords, which brought Northern Ireland closer to ending a three-decade battle over unification with the mainland.
