Fuengirola hosts first beer festival

FUENGIROLA — The first-ever Gran Fiesta de la Cerveza kicked off last weekend at Sohail castle of Fuengirola and will run until Saturday.

The attractive 11th-century site is offering a wide and varied range of gastronomic offerings, spread among 15 tents run by local businesses. On offer are plenty of typical German delicacies, as well as dishes from other countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Greece and the Netherlands.

Food from Spanish regions such as Galicia, Catalonia and Andalusia will be served up, to keep die-hard fans of Spanish cuisine happy.

"We’re going to celebrate an atypical fiesta in Andalusia, similar to the great German beer festivals," the mayor told the local press at the opening on Saturday.

The castle also has a large tent inside, with plenty of long benches where the public can enjoy huge jugs of beer,  Bavarian style, as well as food from that region, such as sausages, roast pork knuckle, sauerkraut and some spectacular desserts. Visitors can enjoy four different types of Paulaner beer such as wheat beer, Paulaner lager, Paulaner Salvator, which is 7.5 percent proof, and, in stark contrast, the alcohol-free version.

There will be lots of music concerts by DJs, quick-change artists, drag queens and dancers taking place on a daily basis

Younger children will also be able to enjoy clown shows, a bouncy castle and competitions.
