Flights resume progressively at Barcelona airport: operator

Flights resumed progressively at Barcelona airport Friday with about half of air traffic controllers turning up for the evening shift, airport operator AENA said.

“Flights at Barcelona airport are resuming progressively, except for those headed to Madrid and the Balearic islands,” said an AENA spokeswoman.

Barcelona’s El Prat airport is the second-largest after Madrid. No information was yet available for other airports, the national airport operator said.

Air traffic controllers started calling in sick en masse around the country at 5:00 pm (1600 GMT), shutting down flights across most of Spain in a surprise long-weekend blow in a dispute over working hours.
