Day of mourning for Madrid bombing victims

4 March 2005

MADRID – Spain’s government will declare an official day of mourning for 11 March and call for five minutes of silence to mark the first anniversary of the Madrid train bombings, government sources said.

The sources said cabinet would unveil a decree on Friday’s weekly cabinet meeting and call on Spanish citizens to hold a five-minute silence at midday.

The chairman of Spain’s federation of municipalities and provinces, Francisco Vazquez, asked the mayors of all Spanish towns similarly to call for five minutes of silence at midday across the country to remember the 191 victims of the blasts in a mark of national solidarity.

The coordinated bombings of four early morning commuter trains, carried out by Islamic extremists, was Spain’s worst ever terror attack.
