Civil Guard officers on trial for death of farmer

19 March 2006

ALMERIA – The trial began on Monday of nine Civil Guard officers accused of playing a part in the death of a 39-year-old farmer at a police station in southern Spain.

The officers at Roquetas de Mar are under investigation for suspected violence which led to the death of Juan Martinez Galdeano on 24 July 2005.

Galdeano went to report a dispute over a traffic accident and died after a struggle with Civil Guard officers.

A judge leading the investigation accused the officers of abusing their positions.

They were said to have used an electric truncheon to restrain Galdeano.
