Briton arrested for luxury car thefts

MADRID – A British citizen has been arrested in the resort town of Denia, north of Alicante, and accused of stealing high-powered luxury cars and of fraud, the National Police reported on Monday.

The man, identified only by the initials V.A.C and said to be aged 43, was in possession of three cars and a considerable sum of cash when detained, the police added.

Among the vehicles confiscated by police was a Mercedes ML320, which had been reported stolen by its owner in the UK and had been fitted with false registration plates.

The other two cars were an Audi A6 and a Mitsubishi Shogun GLS, which had also been given false plates.

Police said the accused man, who is waiting to make a court appearance, had previously been arrested for theft in Spain and fraud in Germany.

In a search of his home, they also found GBP 9,700 and EUR 2,500 in cash, along with various documents, cheque books and credit cards which are still being investigated.
