British teenager dies in holiday drinking binge

27 August 2004

MADRID – A British teenager died after suffering heart failure hours after a holiday drinking binge with friends, Spanish media reports said Friday.

The 13-year-old youngster, named as Antonio Antonpoulos, met up with a group of friends at Santo Tomas on the island of Minorca for a beach party to mark the final night of his summer break.

After drinking beer and tequila bought from a nearby supermarket Antonios complained of feeling unwell and his friends contacted his parents who took him back to their hotel.

In the early hours of Thursday the teenager’s heart stopped beating and although doctors were called they were unable to revive him.

Antonios, who is from Porthcawl, in South Wales, was on a two-week break with his family when the tragedy happened.

There have been persistent calls in Spain to reduce the drink culture among many foreign tourists to the country.

So far no steps have been taken to cut sales of alcohol to young people.
