British man charged with murder of girlfriend in Spain

Madrid – A British man was remanded in custody in eastern Spain Monday on charges of stabbing to death his Irish girlfriend in a hotel room.

The court in the town of Gandia near Valencia said it had ordered the 24-year-old man held without bail until his trial.

The body of the 20-year-old Irish woman was found with a stab wound in her neck Friday afternoon in a hotel in the coastal town of Cabo Roig, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of the city of Alicante.

Her boyfriend was arrested several hours later near the town of Oliva, some 40 kilometres (24 miles) north of Alicante.

Spanish media said the woman and her family had lived in the area for the past two years. It said her boyfriend had been arrested previously on charges of car theft.
