British and Spanishcops stabbed

27 January 2004

MALAGA – Spanish police on Tuesday were searching for two attackers who stabbed a British policeman and his Spanish colleague on a seaside promenade in the southern Mediterranean resort town of Fuengirola, officials said.

The attack occurred late Monday as the two policemen and another British officer, who are members of a joint anti-drug and organised crime task force, were searching for a taxi following a working dinner at a restaurant on the promenade.

According to a senior police official, two men of North African appearance approached the trio and stabbed one of the British officers and the Spaniard in the back and then fled the scene.

The other British officer was unharmed.

Both policemen were taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Malaga where the British officer underwent surgery for stab wounds to the kidneys and was then admitted to the intensive care unit.

The official said the Spanish officer suffered less serious stab wounds in the back. Police were investigating the motive for the attack, he added.
