Biggest museum of Catalan art opens – at last

17 December 2004

BARCELONA- Spain’s largest museum of Catalan art opened its doors after 18 years of renovations that allowed 10 centuries of Catalan art from the Roman era to the avant-garde period to be gathered under the same roof.

King Juan Carlos of Spain and Queen Sofia on Thursday inaugurated the new wings of the National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC).

The museum, located on the hill of Montjuic which overlooks Barcelona’s harbour, is now home to 5,945 works of art exposed in an area of 45,000 square meters (484,000 square feet).

The new wings will house baroque art and works from the Renaissance period, with 236 paintings and sculptures exposed in 16 rooms.

European art from the Pedralbes monastery and from the collection of the late Catalan politician Francesc Cambo are also on show.
