Bank holiday death toll rises on Spain’s roads

MADRID — Forty-eight people were killed in car crashes over the bank holiday long weekend – five more than during the same period last year.

Spanish authorities said between last Friday and the public holiday on Monday, 39 accidents claimed the lives of 48 people.

Twenty people were seriously injured and 21 suffered light injuries.

During the same period in 2004, 43 people were killed in 38 accidents while the year before 57 died on Spain’s roads.

The year before, in 2002, the death toll was still higher, with 63 dying in road crashes.

The worst accident happened in Teruel in northern Spain on Sunday when three people were killed when a car collided with a British-registered lorry.

In another crash, three people were also killed in Chelva in Valencia, in north-east Spain, when a car careered off the road.
