14 November 2006

MADRID — Antonio and Maria are the two most popular names for boys and girls in Spain, a survey published on Tuesday found.

Almost four out of ten males – or 3.8 percent – share their names with the likes of Antonio Banderas.

After Antonio, came Jose (3.6pc) then Manuel (3.2pc) and Francisco (2.9pc).

For women, almost one in three is called Maria.

The National Institute of Statistics published a survey for Spaniards to find out the most popular names and surnames.

They can also discover which areas favoured certain names.

There are three million Josés, for instance and six million Marias.

Other popular names are Cesar (0,19pc), Esteban (0,16pc) o Arturo (0,14pc).

But 0.14pc are called Jonathan and 0.2pc, Mohammed.
