Animal abusers to face up to six months in jail

MADRID — Inflicting ‘unnecessary pain’ on a  domestic animal is to become an imprisonable offence.

The government said on Thursday it is to introduce changes to the penal code over the treatment of animals which could see offenders jailed for between three and six months. 

The proposed changes are designed to stop dogfights or cockfights for public entertainment.

Those who organise or even just attend these events could face large fines.

Another offence would be publicly sacrificing animals.

And one practice which has attracted much attention in recent years is the killing of racing greyhounds once they have become useless to breeders.

Often they are hanged.

But bullfighting would not be affected by these changes to the Penal Code.
