MADRID – Spanish defence minister Jose Antonio Alonso admitted on Wednesday Spanish troops in Afghanistan were coming under “significant insecurity”.
Alonso told the parliamentary commission of defence that under two weeks ago troops were subjected to another mortar attack launched by two individuals 200 metres away from a convoy.
He related the incident as he explained the death of Idota Rodriguez, a Spanish soldier, who was killed in a mortar attack on another convoy in February.
The minister said Afghanistan was a “high cost” mission and Spanish troops were coming under “significant levels of insecurity”.
He said it was the “most painful” of all missions Spain was involved in around the world and had so far cost 81 lives.
But Alonso said Spain had a clear commitment to keep up with the international peacekeeping mission.
