Germany nabs convicted mafia hit man

28 January 2005

MAINZ – German police said on Friday they had arrested a 56-year-old professional killer who was on Italy’s list of 30 most wanted criminals after a career with the Naples-based Camorra.

He had slipped away just before he was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2004 for murdering the brother of a public prosecutor.

After German federal police realised he was living quietly in the western city of Mainz, just across the river from Federal Crime Office (BKA) headquarters, they took no chances. Heavily armed officers surprised the man Wednesday, the BKA in Wiesbaden said.

The man is in custody awaiting extradition to Italy.
