BERLIN – Berlin’s 56th film festival opens Thursday with British-born director Marc Evans’ “Snow Cake,” a drama depicting the friendship between an autistic woman and a man traumatized after a fatal car accident.
Starring Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman, “Snow Cake” reflects a recurring theme in the films showing in the festival’s main competition, many of which deal with questions arising in everyday life.
A total of 26 films have been selected for the main competition, including 19 world premieres.
Altogether the festival will show 360 films from a total of 56 countries.
Both London-born Rickman and America’s Weaver are among the stars expected at this year’s festival.
Other stars and directors expected to make their way to Berlin also include Isabelle Huppert, Gael Garcia Bernal, Isabella Rossellini, George Clooney, Heath Ledger, Meryl Streep and John Hurt.
Coming during Berlin’s cold grey winter months, the festival’s annual glamour offensive helps to give the German capital a touch of glitz amid the February gloom.
