German authorities said Wednesday they suspect arson in a series of fires on the posh North Sea island of Sylt that left nearly 400 people temporarily homeless and caused costly property damage.

The first rash of blazes came overnight Sunday to Monday at sites including a hotel, a training academy and a pensioners' home as well as in several wheelie bins and a shed, police said. Four people were injured.

Authorities estimated the damage at several hundreds of thousands of euros (dollars).

Two nights later, an arbour and a car port went up in flames and a pile of paper burned in the cellar of a hospital, police said.

"The evidence pointing toward arson is growing," a police spokeswoman told AFP.

Sylt is a playground for Germany's rich and famous, attracting socialites, business titans and celebrities during the summer months.
