Poland on Monday confirmed its first case of the dangerous E. coli bacteria after a 29-year-old woman who arrived from Germany fell ill, but her life was not in immediate danger, officials said.

"We have confirmed one case and suspect two others, both concerning people who recently spent time in Germany. The results of the test in these two cases will be known in the coming days," Jan Bodnar, spokesman for Poland's State Sanitation Inspectorate (GIS) told AFP Monday.

The woman who is a resident of Germany's Hamburg region, was hospitalised on May 23 in Szczecin, northwestern Poland, where she was undergoing kidney dialysis, Bodnar said.

German authorities pointed Sunday to organic sprouts from a farm in Lower Saxony as the likely culprit behind a wave of infections with the deadly E. coli bacteria, but preliminary test results Monday found no trace of the bug that has killed at least 23 people, all but one in Germany.
