Merkel to attend Libya conference in Paris

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will attend a Paris conference on Libya's future on Thursday, her spokesman Steffen Seibert told a news conference.

"We will do everything we can" to provide humanitarian assistance to the Libyan people in the wake of the toppling of the regime of Moamer Kadhafi, he said on Monday.

"The German government is happy the rebels have been victorious," he added.

There were no details on what aid Germany might give Libya's National Transitional Council.

A likely conference decision will be the speeding up of the release of Libyan assets frozen abroad.

A German foreign ministry spokesman said such assets amounted to one billion euros ($1.45 billion dollars) in Germany alone.

Germany abstained in the March UN Security Council vote to authorize its NATO partners to extend a no-fly zone over Libya to prevent the slaughter of civilians.
