The UN atomic watchdog concluded a review of Germany's nuclear regulatory system, the IAEA said Monday, praising its response to the Fukushima disaster earlier this year.

"(The) team identified several strengths of the German nuclear safety regulators, including the prompt and coordinated incident response activities... to the Fukushima accident" by federal authorities and the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, the International Atomic Energy Agency said in a statement.

"The environmental radiation monitoring programme and the communication to the public and interested parties were carried out in an exemplary manner," it went on.

The peer review, which checks a state's nuclear set-up against IAEA safety standards, is neither an inspection nor an audit, the IAEA specified.

The German review was conducted between September 4 and 10 in Bonn, Stuttgart and Berlin, it said.
