Police in Hannover shot dead a man who turned on them with knives after answering an emergency call

Hannover -- Police shot and killed a 34-year-old man near Hannover late Tuesday after the suspect attacked a police officer with two knives, police said.

One of the gunshots also hit the 48-year-old officer who was being attacked, resulting in serious injuries.

The attacker was known to police because of a history of violent attacks, police said.

Police were called after the man vandalized the door to the apartment of a former friend and threatened her. Police tried to demobilize him with pepper spray.

When he turned on the policeman, the officer's colleagues fired their guns. The 34-year-old died later in hospital.

Unlike in the UK and Ireland, it is common practice for police officers in Germany to carry firearms.
