German police on Friday formally arrested two men suspected of planning a bomb attack, the day after the pair were detained in a series of raids in Berlin.

The suspects are a 24-year-old German of Lebanese origin and a 28-year-old Palestinian from the Gaza Strip who were detained after police raided their homes as well as a mosque in the working-class neighbourhood of Wedding, police said.

Investigators believe the men bought large quantities of chemical products which could be used in the making of explosives.

However police said they there was no indication as to whether they had a specific target in mind.

There has been supposition in the press and elsewhere that the suspects may have been plotting an attack linked to the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the United States or a papal visit later this month.

Nor do the suspects appear to belong to a known terror organisation or have links to militants abroad, according to the investigating authorities.

The federal prosecutor's office, which normally handles major terror cases, has not yet taken up the case.
