German new car sales rose sharply in August, with 237,700 vehicles registered, sector federation VDA said on Friday, a gain of 18 percent compared to the same month in 2010.

Since January, sales have risen by 11 percent compared to the previous year, with 2.1 million new registrations, VDA said.

The federation expects a total of 3.1 million vehicles to be sold in car-mad Germany across the year.

Exports of German cars also rose sharply, by 17 percent to 299,400 vehicles, said the VDA, whose president Matthias Wissmann stressed that: "There has never been such a high export volume in the month of August."

"For the whole of 2011, we expect a total export volume of 4.5 million vehicles, which would be a new record," he added.
