German minister says to delete Facebook account

Germany's consumer affairs minister said Thursday she would delete her Facebook account, arguing the social networking site still fails to protect privacy despite new measures announced last week.

"I will end my membership," Ilse Aigner told a news conference in Berlin after talks with Facebook's policy director for Europe, Richard Allan.

"As consumer protection minister, I cannot accept that a leading company is in breach of data protection laws and largely disregards the private sphere of its members."

US-based Facebook, with 400 million users, last Thursday unveiled a redesigned privacy-settings page to provide a single control for content and to "significantly reduce" the amount of information visible to everyone.

Last month it had sparked criticism from privacy and consumer groups, US lawmakers and the European Union by adding the ability for partner websites to incorporate data regarding members of the social-networking service.
