German inflation rose to 1.1 percent in July, slightly below analyst forecasts for Europe's biggest economy, provisional figures showed on Wednesday.

The German consumer price index rose an annualised 0.9 percent in June and analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires had expected 1.2 percent for July.

On a monthly basis, inflation came in at 0.2 percent, slightly below expectations of a 0.3 percent gain.

The Destatis statistics office pointed to energy prices, principally for heating and motor fuels, as the main factor in the July pick-up.

But it also noted "strong increases in fruit and vegetable prices," as well as hikes in the cost of package tours and holiday lodging.
