Berlin -- Twenty-five children were injured on Tuesday, four seriously, when a school bus careered off a snowy road and plunged some six metres (20 feet) into a riverbed in southwest Germany, police said.

The accident happened early Tuesday morning near the village of Bonndorf in the Black Forest, when the bus driver attempted a sharp turn on a narrow road not far from the Swiss border.

The four seriously injured children were taken to hospital. Those with lighter injuries -- as well as the driver -- were treated at the scene. A further 15 pupils escaped unharmed, police said.

The police suspect invisible black ice was to blame for the accident.
