EU police Wednesday raided the headquarters of Kosovo's interior ministry and police and arrested six people, including three officials, in a crackdown on a corruption network, a press release said.

The operation was "related to a major investigation into alleged corruption and procurement fraud" in the purchase of weapons and ammunition for the Kosovo police, the EU mission for rule of law (EULEX) said.

"In total six arrests were made including ... two officers from Kosovo Police administration and one employee from the ministry of internal affairs," the statement added.

"In addition twelve locations were searched all over Kosovo, including private houses, business premises and public offices."

German police also cooperated in the operation and searched one business premises and one private house in Germany as part of the probe, EULEX said.

EULEX was launched in Kosovo just months after it unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in February 2008.

It is mandated to oversee and strengthen the rule of law in the newly declared country.

The mission is empowered to take on cases considered too sensitive for the local judiciary.
