A booming Chinese market and a strong recovery in the United States boosted German luxury car maker Audi in May, leading to a 14.6-percent rise in unit sales, the Volkswagen unit said on Tuesday.

Audi delivered 94,900 vehicles last month, with unit sales in China up 39.9 percent to 17,396 vehicles, a statement said.

Western European deliveries increased by five percent to 55,250 cars, and US unit sales were 22.7 percent stronger at 9,205 vehicles.

Audi's domestic market Germany was weaker however, posting a drop of 4.6 percent to 19,759 units.

Sales director Peter Schwarzenbauer was quoted as saying that "for the overall year of 2010, I expect a significantly double-digit growth rate" in unit sales.

Luxury car makers including BMW and Mercedes-Benz did not benefit much from car scrapping schemes last year, but have seen sales rebound strongly since then.
