German car group BMW announced Tuesday it had recalled more than 150,000 vehicles in the United States due to fuel pump problems.

In a statement, BMW said it had notified the US Environmental Protection Agency of a voluntary recall of some 130,000 vehicles built between 2007 and 2010.

Affected vehicles would either receive a new fuel pump or updated software, it said.

BMW said it had also notified the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it would voluntarily recall nearly 21,000 X5 all-terrain vehicles for similar fuel pump problems that could lead to engine failure.

The pumps would be replaced, BMW said.
