Twenty-five young Germans were sent to hospital for observation Wednesday after an early morning fire at a high school in southwestern Denmark where they had been staying, police said.

"Just to make sure they have been sent for observation for smoke inhalation," the police duty officer at the southern Jutland regional headquarters in Esbjerg told AFP.

The 25 were reportedly part of a group of 50 young Germans travelling with a youth club based in Schleswig, Germany, that had rented the Hoptrup high school until the end of this week.

According to police, emergency services had received a call at 4:27 am (0227 GMT) from the school headmaster alerting them to the fire, which appeared to have started in a common room in the school premises.

The building suffered extensive damage, the police duty officer said said, adding that a bus was on its way from Germany to pick up the youth club group.
