German auto giant Volkswagen said Monday it planned to raise output of sport utility vehicles (SUV) at its Slovak plant by 25 percent next year to meet rising demand.

"The company will invest 50 million euros to expand the assembly line producing SUVs during the upcoming holiday," Volkswagen said in a statement.

The assembly lines will resume working on January 16. Output of the recently launched New Small Family model line will not be affected, it added.

Volkswagen produces the high-end Touareg, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne models at its plant in the Slovak capital Bratislava.

It plans to produce about 400,000 cars in Bratislava this year, up from 144,500 last year.

Volkswagen exports nearly all of the cars produced at its Slovak plant, with some 36 percent going to Germany and nearly 19 percent to China.
