Troubled automaker Opel said Wednesday it has recalled thousands of new Corsa compact cars in Germany and across Europe to check a potential problem with their hand brakes.

"The measure affects 15,500 Corsas in Germany" plus an undetermined number in other European countries, a spokesman told AFP.

"There have been no accidents and the problem was discovered during internal quality controls," he added.

The brake cables need a brief service to ensure they work properly, the spokesman said.

Several auto manufacturers have been forced to recall models this year, with the world's leading group Toyota hit by widespread problems that have affected around 10 million cars, mostly in the United States.
