Audi, the top-of-the-range carmaker owned by German auto giant Volkswagen, said Tuesday it would build a new plant in central Mexico with production there set to begin in 2016.

The company will build the successor to its current Audi Q5 SUV model at the plant in San Jose Chiapa, central Mexico, with 150,000 vehicles planned for production annually, it said.

Work on building the plant is scheduled to begin next year.

"The production site in San Jose Chiapa meets various key requirements of our global growth strategy and we can step up our activities in American markets," Rupert Stadler, chairman of the board of management, said in a statement.

Great. There you can get workers for 1 1/2 pesos an hour, close the plant in Germany and increase the list of Arbeitslose.
