Merkel to have talks with Bush in Washington
13 December 2005
BERLIN – German Chancellor Angela Merkel will have talks in Washington with U.S. President George W. Bush next month, the government said Tuesday in a statement.
Merkel will arrive in Washington for meetings with Bush and other senior officials on January 12 and leave on January 14, said the statement.
Ties between the U.S. and Germany were badly strained by former chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s opposition to the Iraq war and Merkel is seeking to improve transatlantic relations.
But she is expected to again underline that Germany has no plans to send troops to Iraq.
Merkel, who heads a grand coalition of her Christian Democrats and Schroeder’s Social Democrats, was formally elected by parliament last month.
