Berlin fan zone closed as capacity is filled for Euro final

Berlin — The Berlin fan zone was closed as it was filled to its capacity of around 500,000 more than three hours ahead of Germany’s Euro 2008 final with Spain in Vienna on Sunday.

A spokeswoman said that the area at the Brandenburg Gate could take up no more people as "the visitors are standing shoulder by shoulder."

The fans were entertained by live music acts and D-Jays ahead of the broadcast of the Vienna final which was due to start at 18.45.

Some 1,600 police were on duty in Berlin to ensure safety.

Another large crowd is expected in Berlin’s fan zone on Monday when the team presents itself in the early afternoon, regardless of the outcome of the final.

Millions of Germans were due to watch the match at fan zones around the country, in restaurants and bars, or at home. The television audience was estimated to be around 30 million.
