US soldier dies after being shot by German police

Wuerzburg, Germany — A US soldier died early Friday after being shot by a German police officer in the southern state of Bavaria.

The incident happened after the soldier broke into the apartment of his former girlfriend and threatened her with an assault rifle, police said.

The woman was able to flee and alert police, who cornered the 30-year-old man in a field near the town of Koenigsberg.

When police tried to arrest him, the soldier pointed his weapon at them, prompting one of the officers to fire, a police spokesman said.

The soldier, who was based in nearby Schweinfurt, was taken to a local hospital. Doctors performed emergency surgery but were unable to save his life.

German police informed the US military of the incident.
