LUGANO – Switzerland midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta is expected to recover in time from an ankle injury to play in the Euro 2008 opener against the Czech Republic on 7 June.
"I can report that everything is going well. Now Barnetta’s training intensity can be raised steadily," said Swiss team doctor Cuno Wetzel on Tuesday.
Barnetta, 23, injured his ankle in the Swiss training camp last week. The Bayer Leverkusen player is back in training but will be rested in Switzerland’s final tuneup match on Friday against Liechtenstein.
Switzerland opens Euro 2008 against the Czechs, with Portugal and Turkey the other opponents in the group stage of the 7-29 June tournament it co-hosts with Austria.
