Switzerland lifts travel restrictions to Red Sea resorts

Switzerland on Thursday lifted restrictions on travel to Egypt's Red Sea resorts but warned that non-urgent visits to the rest of the country should be avoided.

"The seaside resorts at the Red Sea can ... be visited," said the Swiss foreign ministry on its website.

However, it advised citizens to "stay at a distance from mass gatherings and demonstrations of all kinds."

It also stressed that "non-urgent travel to other parts of the country is discouraged."

"The country is going through a political crisis. Despite apparent peace, development of the security situation remains uncertain," said the ministry.

Following the travel advisory revision, Swiss travel operator Kuoni said that packages to Red Sea resorts Sharm El-Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam were back on its programme.

Nationwide protests erupting on January 25 ended Hosni Mubarak's grip on power in less than three weeks. However, some 365 people were killed and about 5,500 injured during the 18 days of protests that led to Mubarak's resignation.

Mubarak fled to his closely-guarded villa in Sharm.
