The election to the federal cabinet of Bernese Social Democrat Senator Simonetta Sommaruga on Wednesday means a majority of women are leading the seven-person Swiss government for the first time in history. Sommaruga, who replaces outgoing fellow socialist Moritz Leuenberger, won after four rounds of voting by a joint sitting of the upper and lower houses of parliament while businessman and Bern MP Johann Schneider-Ammann is expected to fill the other vacancy.
