Libyan oil refinery Tamoil has suspended production in Switzerland without giving reasons, a day after a police raid.

Geneva -- Libyan oil refinery Tamoil has suspended production in Switzerland a day after a police raid, local media reported Wednesday.

During a meeting on Wednesday afternoon, "the management confirmed that production has been halted without giving details of the reason or the duration," Blaise Carron, a trade unionist told Swiss television TSR.

Tamoil has declined comment, said Swiss news wire ATS.

Swiss police on Tuesday said it raided Tamoil sites as part of a probe into allegations that it violated environmental regulations.

Police, magistrates and specialists who took samples entered Tamoil's refinery sites to see if there were "possible violations against legal standards on the environment," a police statement said.

Tripoli halted oil deliveries to Switzerland last year after one of the sons of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi was arrested by Geneva police.

"It is a decision of Libya and not Tamoil," Tamoil CEO Issam Zanati said at the time.

Libya supplies about 2.5 million tonnes of crude to Switzerland a year, about 20 percent of the country's total needs.
