A 38-year-old Hungarian has been killed while base jumping in central Switzerland, police said Thursday.

"In a delicate windy situation, he opened his parachute and crashed against a rocky (mountain) wall," police said.

The man was with a group of eight base jumpers of different nationalities, and was the last to jump on Tuesday morning at central Switzerland's Muerrenfluh, a platform set in mountains, from which enthusiasts jump with parachutes.

According to Swiss news agency ATS, the accident was the third fatal base jumping case in Lauterbrunnen -- where Muerrenfluh is located-- this year.

A Canadian was killed in September, while a German died in August.

Base jumping can also involve jumping illegally from high structures such as buildings.
