Former Kazakhstan prime minister Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been appointed to head the European headquarters of the United Nations, the UN said Monday.

"United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan as the new Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG)," it said in a statement.

Tokayev, who was Kazakhstan's prime minister from 1999 to 2002, takes over from Russia's Sergei Ordzhonikidze.
