Switzerland said one of its citizens who also has Tunisian nationality has been killed in Tunisia, as it urged authorities Thursday in the north African country to respect protestors' human rights.

"The Foreign Affairs Department (DFAE) confirms the death of a citizen with double-nationality in Tunisia. The embassy of Switzerland in Tunis as well as central services are in contact with her close ones," said the ministry in a statement to AFP.

"The DFAE calls on Tunisia to respect dialogue, fundamental liberties and human rights -- these include the freedom of opinion and assembly.

"To this end, the DFAE has invited the Tunisian ambassador to Bern yesterday for a meeting in order to transmit to him Switzerland's concerns," added the ministry.

According to Swiss radio RSR who interviewed the victim's brother, she was shot in the throat Wednesday evening during a demonstration in the north of Tunisia, Dar Chaabane.

Married to a Swiss, the victim had worked for 30 years in local hospitals.
