Ukraine's president visits Switzerland

Viktor Yushchenko meets with Swiss President Merz on Thursday and Economy Minister Leuthard on Friday.

GENEVA - Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko started a two-day official visit to Switzerland on Thursday, Swiss authorities said.

He met Swiss President and Finance Minister Hans-Rudolf Merz for talks on bilateral relations, their respective European policies, the consequences of the economic downturn on Switzerland and Ukraine, and multilateral cooperation, a statement said.

Yushchenko is travelling with Foreign Minister Volodymyr Khandogiy, Culture and Tourism Minister Vasyl Vovkun, and the head of the Ukrainian national bank Volodymyr Stelmakh.

He is to meet Swiss Economy Minister Doris Leuthard on Friday.

Ukraine is the second largest export market for Switzerland among the ex-Soviet countries in the Community of Independent States (CIS).

In 2008, Swiss exports to Ukraine rose by 17 percent, to CHF 628 million.

Imports from Ukraine rose by 21 percent, to CHF 144 million.
