A hip operation may keep 18-year-old skiing champion Lara Gut from competing in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Paris -- Switzerland's 18-year-old skiing prodigy Lara Gut looks doubtful for the 2010 Winter Olympics following an operation on a dislocated right hip, her father said on Tuesday.

"Lara will be able to get back on her skis in January," Pauli Gut, who is also her coach, told AFP by telephone.

"The Games? We are not thinking about them. The priority is her health."

Gut, double silver medallist at the world championships in February, had the operation last Friday in Bern after sustaining the injury at the end of September while training on a glacier at Saas-Fe.

The Vancouver Games begin 12  February and Gut would need at least three weeks’ training to rebuild muscle mass before fighting to win her place back in Switzerland's competitive women's team.

She became the youngest skier (aged 17 years, 237 days) to win a race on the World Cup circuit, a super giant slalom in St Moritz in December 2008.
